Bradshaw Crandell
(1896 - 1966)

First cover for Judge, 1921, others followed for College Humor, American, Ladies' Home Journal, Motion Picture, Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Redbook. Took over Cosmopolitan covers from Harrison Fisher where his pastels of pretty models and actresses (Carole Lomboard, Bette Davis, Veronica Lake) made him famous. Ad work for Old Gold (pre-dating Petty), Palmolive and others. Left illustration to learn and concentrate on oil portraits at which he was equally successful.
