Frank Frazetta
(1928 - 2010)

First comic art published when he was only 16 (Tally Ho comics). Other assignments followed, allowing Frazetta to show his versatility (from loveable animals to westerns to sci-fi). From the early 1950s and into the 60s, handled art chores for Al Capp's Lil Abner comics. Best known for magazine covers for Warren Publications (Creepy, Eerie, Vamiperella, Blazing Combat) and paperback art for Edgar Rice Burroughs adventures (Tarzan, sci-fi titles) and Robert E Howard barbarian epics (Conan). Did several movie posters in the 1960s, usually for comedies, and more action-oriented films in the 70s.

Luana (1973) Frazetta - 022
NOTE: Luana was actually a 1968 West German/Italian production (Luana la figlia delle foresta vergine) that became most notable, in English speaking countries at least, for the Frazetta artwork (some of which started as covers for magazines and paperbacks). I'm not even sure the film even screened in the US.

The Gauntlet (1977) Frazetta - 024

Eerie (1977) Frazetta - 025
NOTE: Frazetta's poster art was usually better, and despite the fantastic elements, even more believable than the films it promoted (e.g., The Gauntlet, above). With this Eerie cover he actually produces art that's far more interesting than a movie he DIDN'T paint the poster for, the 1977 King Kong remake. Interestingly, he did do the paperback-tie-in for the remake, and, again, it was better than the movie.
